National Library Week Is Happening In Waco: Be Ready To Read

WACO, Texas – (April 9, 2021) The Waco-McLennan County Library is having virtual events to support National Library Week. From April 5-10, the community is encouraged to support libraries alongside actress, author and activist Natalie Portman, the honorary library chair.

“I’m delighted to join [American Library Association] and libraries everywhere in celebrating National Library Week,” Portman said in an ALA press release. “[Libraries] show us anything is possible by encouraging a love of learning, discovery and exploration. I hope people will take time during the week to visit their library online or in person.”

Because of current restrictions, the library is taking action through online platforms to spread the word about this week. There are days such as National Library Workers Day, National Library Outreach Day and Take Action for Libraries Day.

Throughout the week there are lots of activities for the community to participate in. According to the ALA’s Day-By-Day Guide website, there’s a link to contact President Biden and Members of congress to get more funds for public libraries. Additionally, they advertise the Virtual Bookmobile Parade and simply posting on social media using the hashtags #NationalLibraryWeek, #LibraryOutreachDay and #MyLibraryIs to spread awareness.

National Library Workers Day is going to be celebrated on April 6, where the American Library Association is showcasing their Galaxy of Stars: nominations for library workers in every state. This national day helps raise awareness for dedicated, hard-working librarians and staff members. It also advocates for better pay for these workers, and is sometimes combined with Equal Pay Day.

The Waco-McLennan County Library is planning to move toward Phase III, allowing curbside pickup, grab & go services, and appointment only computer usage. There will also be enforced plexi-shields, face coverings, quarantined returns and social distancing throughout the library.

“We are excited to be moving into Phase III of our reopening plan, and we know we'll be able to serve more patrons now.” Mandy Reading, the president of the county library, said. “We still want to encourage all Wacoans to stay plugged in to what the library is offering, especially during National Library Week. Because reading is essential for all walks of life, and we want to celebrate it.”
